The “Holy F***!” Rating Pain Scale of Coolsculpting® …A True Story.

A true-life testimonial of a real Coolsculpting® technician and client.

One of the most common questions we get from clients looking to get permanent fat destruction done, is what the difference is between fat freezing services and ultrasound. For more technical information, we have a detailed blog for you to review that discusses the differences between the two major brands, Ultrashape® and Coolsculpting®. But, below we have posted one of our favorite reviews from one of our clients about her experience with Coolsculpting®. If nothing else we hope you get a laugh.

Her name has been left out as she is still in the industry. Her experience may not be the typical experience, and should not be taken into account as a typical experience... but it is one that we definitely enjoyed reading either way!

Coolsculpting®…Where do I begin...

I wanted to love it; it sounded like a dream come true: stubborn fat pockets to be gone and the added bonus was I was training to become a Coolsculpting® technician. So I’d be able to have 5 to 7 cycles for free! Yes... for free!

My journey started a few years ago in a small prairie city.  I had been obsessed with aesthetics since my early teens, so to be given the opportunity to work in a skin clinic... let’s just say I was beyond excited!

Fast forward…I am THE volunteer for the day's Coolsculpting® demonstration. It sure sounds simple and easy enough, and I was excited.

I decided to have a cycle done on my lower abdomen.
“Maybe I can pull off the ole crop top and low rises again.”  jk...  I’ve never worn a crop top but the thought was there.

I’m measured, pinched, and doodled on with permanent sharpies (super annoying to remove!).  Finally, I am resting comfortably on a treatment bed, none the wiser of what I was about to be in for!

The quick realization of "Oh S***!" started when something freezing cold and slimy was placed on my abdomen. I was later told it was there to protect my skin from frostbite. "frost bite?".... "No one said ANYTHING about FROSTBITE!"

Then came the applicator.  They had explained the technology so I was expecting the feeling of vacuuming (pulling) my fat into the applicator but "Holy S***, did the suction hurt!"

God help me that they get it positioned correctly on the first try.  On the 3rd attempt, it was in place... "whew!"

I was told, after eight minutes, I would not feel the discomfort anymore. *eye roll*. They pressed the snowflake (lol) button and I was Coolsculpting®.

I would describe the “discomfort” as when your freezing, frostbit toes start to thaw out. Eight loooonnnngggg minutes later, I could no longer feel a thing.

Forty-ish minutes later, I’m done! The applicator is coming off. Just like after nursing your baby, you gotta break the seal. I literally had a brick of tissue sitting there on my belly. Its actually referred to as a "brick of butter".

For best results, they say “We need to massage your butter”. What?? You want to what???

“Don’t touch my f***ing butter.”

I am firmly opposed to this.  I’m in pain, but I politely say “Please, don’t touch me”.  Despite my protest, they insisted. The uncomfortable hand massage has now made the butter into a melted Slurpy®.  I think to myself, "I am only now starting to feel a sense of relief" since the pain has subsided.

Fast forward a few days ...

... and I realize I still can’t feel my abdomen. I am not able to feel it for three weeks to be exact!

It feels odd to poke your belly button and not feel it. It is a strange sensation for sure. How was I going to wear a crop top? I can’t even feel my own belly button. Maybe it wasn't a super-rational thought, but meh, it was MY thought.

Three weeks post-treatment the nerve pain started! It felt like someone was stabbing me from the inside with an Ice Pick. Not that I know what an Ice Pick feel slike being jabbed into your belly, but I can only imagine that was the feeling. It was debilitating!

They say only 1% of clients will experience this nerve pain. That is definitely not my experience. Apparently, I have seen this entire 1%, because everyone I have talked to that has had the treatment, has expressed some degree of post pain. Even if only a 1% chance, I wish I had been made aware of this possibility!

In all seriousness, my pain lasted for 10 days or so! I actually needed pain medications to function in my life.  It was an absolutely, horrible experience and after that, I decided that Coolsculpting® would NOT be something I offered my clients.

So, let’s just say, I’m not a fan of fat freezing! When asked if I wanted to use the rest of my free cycles to complete my sculpt, I laughed and just said,  "Nah, I think I’ll pass".

Now pass me a drink, my PTSD is kicking in!
