PicoWay vs PicoSure

PicoWay vs PicoSure

When considering laser tattoo removal, two leading technologies are the PicoSure and PicoWay lasers. Both utilize picosecond technology—delivering energy in trillionths of a second—to effectively break down tattoo pigments.

Here is a quick analogy to describe how important the power of the laser is in tattoo removal. This is the key difference between the PicoSure and the PicoWay.

Think of a garden hose filling a bucket. If you have strong water pressure and simply let the hose run directly into the bucket, the water flows smoothly and penetrates deep, gurgling to the bottom and filling it from within. This is like a high-powered, defocused laser: the energy travels deeper into the skin, delivering sustained power over an area and depth.

Now, attach a jet nozzle to the same hose. The water becomes a sharp, high-velocity stream. But instead of sinking into the bucket, it hits the surface and splashes, bouncing and skimming off. This is like a highly focused laser beam: the energy is concentrated at the surface, delivering intense power in a small spot, often without penetrating deeply. For tattoo removal we want to treat the entire depth of the ink not just the surface.  Treating the surface will cause quick fading but only for the first 3 treatments after that it can’t reach any deeper ink and just continues to create scar tissue trapping the ink below.

So, in this analogy:

  • Water pressure = laser power
  • Nozzle setting = laser focus
  • How the water behaves in the bucket = depth and effect of the laser

Here is how they differ in several key aspects:

Wavelengths & Versatility

  • PicoWay: Offers four true wavelengths—532nm, 730nm, 785nm, and 1064nm—enabling it to target a broader spectrum of ink colors, including challenging shades like red, orange, and purple. This versatility allows for more comprehensive treatments across various skin types.

  • PicoSure: Primarily operates at 755nm (Alexandrite), with optional filters to convert to 532nm and 1064nm. However, these conversions can result in reduced energy output, potentially affecting treatment efficacy, especially for certain ink colors and darker skin tones.

Power & Pulse Duration

  • PicoWay: Delivers higher peak power (0.9 GW) with shorter pulse durations (250 picoseconds), leading to more efficient pigment fragmentation and reduced thermal damage to surrounding tissues.

  • PicoSure: Has a lower peak power (0.36 GW) and longer pulse durations (750 picoseconds), which may result in less effective pigment breakdown and a higher risk of thermal side effects.

Treatment Effectiveness & Skin Safety

  • PicoWay: Due to its multiple wavelengths and higher power, PicoWay is particularly effective for removing multi-colored tattoos and is safer for darker skin tones, minimizing the risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
  • PicoSure: While effective for certain ink colors, it may be less efficient for others and poses a higher risk of pigmentation changes in individuals with darker skin.

Treatment Speed & Sessions

  • PicoWay: The combination of higher power and multiple wavelengths allows for more rapid pigment breakdown, potentially reducing the number of sessions required for complete tattoo removal.

  • PicoSure: May require more sessions due to its lower power and limited wavelength range, especially for stubborn or multi-colored tattoos.

Cost Considerations

While both lasers are advanced technologies, the cost of treatments can vary based on the provider, location, and specific tattoo characteristics. Generally, PicoWay's enhanced capabilities may justify a higher cost, but the potential for fewer sessions could offset the expense.

Conclusion

For individuals seeking efficient, comprehensive tattoo removal—especially those with multi-colored tattoos or darker skin tones—the PicoWay laser offers superior versatility, power, and safety. Conversely, PicoSure may still be suitable for certain applications but has limitations in wavelength versatility and power.

Consulting with a qualified laser specialist can help determine the most appropriate treatment based on your specific tattoo and skin characteristics.
